Oh, January. This is not the month that I had planned.
These are the steps that I took to make a batik of one of my teenagers. It is an example that I use to guide students through creating a self portrait.
I do try to encourage expression rather than realism for the portraits.

Sketch with pencil on paper. Transfer it to your cotton. Add some shadows.
Cover areas to remain white with molten wax.
Apply the lightest colour of fabric dye.
I really like this stage, I think I could have stopped here.
Let the dye dry. Apply more wax to preserve the current colour.
Add a deeper colour of fabric dye.
It could also be a deeper version of the same colour.
Add more wax, and then the darkest dye that you will be using.
Iron your work between newsprint to set the dye and remove the wax.
Add crayon if you wish.
Iron again to set the crayon. Remember to sign your art work.
(The bird art will wait until I get
my studio, paperwork and current projects in order.)
Thank you for stopping by!
